Botulinum toxin formulations

Botulinum toxin medicines temporarily reduce muscle activity by interfering with nerve signalling. They are used for certain movement-related lines and for other medical indications. They differ from dermal fillers, which add or restore volume. Identify the exact active substance and medicine rather than treating the generic term as one uniform product.

What the label does not tell you

The potency units of different botulinum toxin preparations are not interchangeable. A lower price per unit is therefore not a meaningful comparison without knowing the formulation and treatment plan. Authentic supply, storage and administration matter. In the United States, these medicines carry a boxed warning about spread of toxin effects; swallowing or breathing difficulties after treatment require immediate medical attention.

Questions to bring

What is the exact medicine and active substance? Does its local authorisation cover the proposed treatment? How was it sourced and will its batch be recorded in my notes? How do my medicines or muscle and nerve conditions affect the plan? Who do I contact for unexpected weakness, asymmetry or other reactions?

Evidence and scope

Safety information and approved uses differ between formulations. Ask for the patient leaflet for the exact medicine being proposed.
