Liposuction

Liposuction, also called lipoplasty or suction-assisted fat removal, removes fat through a cannula during surgery. It belongs to both body contouring and aesthetic surgery. It differs from external cooling, heating or fat-dissolving injections.

A surgical technique family

Conventional suction, ultrasound-assisted and laser-assisted approaches are different techniques. Assisted liposuction still removes fat surgically; it is not equivalent to non-invasive ultrasound or light treatment.

Goals and suitability

Liposuction targets selected fat deposits rather than treating obesity. Skin laxity and cellulite may need a different assessment. Ask whether the proposed contour goal is realistic and how skin quality affects the expected appearance.

Recovery and risk

Anaesthesia, bleeding, infection, fluid changes, contour irregularities and serious complications require a surgical discussion. Recovery, compression, follow-up and emergency access should be explained by the operating team.
