Body contouring
Body contouring covers selected devices, injectable fat-reduction treatments and surgery. They differ in mechanism, evidence and recovery. Local contouring is not a treatment for obesity.

External light-based body-contouring equipment. This example differs from fat freezing, injectable lipolytics and surgical liposuction.
- Often discussed for
- Small fat bulges or selected contour concerns
- Result pattern
- May be gradual; repeat treatment may be needed
Commonly known as
Names you may see for this category or its subtypes. Some describe a technique or a marketing concept rather than the same treatment.
- Body sculpting / body shaping
- Broad names that may cover several technologies. Ask which one is proposed.
- Fat freezing / cryolipolysis
- Names for controlled cooling aimed at localized fat.
- Liposuction
- Surgical fat removal. It is different from non-invasive body contouring; muscle-toning devices are another distinct approach.
- Lipolytics / injectable fat reduction
- Includes deoxycholic acid formulations. The exact medicine, body area and local authorisation matter; this is different from fat-freezing devices or surgical liposuction.
- RF / ultrasound / light-based contouring
- Different energy technologies. External treatments differ from RF-, laser- or ultrasound-assisted surgery; the exact device and intended use matter.
- Muscle stimulation / toning
- Electrical or magnetic muscle stimulation has a different mechanism and goal from surgical fat removal or injection lipolysis.
- Body ultrasound
- Ultrasound can target localized fat or skin laxity. The treatment goal, device and depth change what the evidence means.
- Low-level body light
- Photobiomodulation uses low-dose light without intended tissue heating. Circumference findings do not establish reliable fat loss.
- Thermal laser contouring
- External laser systems can heat localized fat. This differs from low-level light and from laser-assisted surgical liposuction.
- Electrical muscle stimulation
- EMS or NMES activates muscles through skin electrodes. Muscle effects, waist measurements and fat reduction are separate claims.
- Magnetic muscle stimulation
- Magnetic devices induce muscle contractions. Magnetic-only systems and combinations with radiofrequency need separate evidence.
Know the limitations
Results may be temporary and differ by device. Ask how noticeable the expected change is.
Risks vary by technology
Pain, bruising, burns, or nerve effects can occur. Fat freezing can rarely cause fat to enlarge instead of shrink; this may require surgery.
Injectable lipolytics
Deoxycholic acid disrupts fat cells. In the United States, the approved use is selected submental fat beneath the chin in adults; use elsewhere is unapproved and not recommended by the FDA. Risks include nerve injury, difficulty swallowing and local tissue injury. Ask whether the exact product, route and proposed area are authorised in the treatment country.
